Faygo: The Detroit Soda That Goes Way Beyond Grape
Yousaf MirFaygo has a reputation problem in some parts of the country — the wrong kind of association from the wrong kind of cultural moment — but strip all of that away and what you have is one of the most interesting regional soda brands in America, with a history dating back to 1907 and a lineup of flavors that's more creative and more diverse than almost any national brand. At Sweet Palace, we carry over a dozen Faygo flavors, and the story of the brand is worth knowing before you choose.
The History
Ben and Perry Feigenson, Russian immigrant brothers, founded Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works in Detroit, Michigan in 1907 — the same year that Henry Ford introduced the Model N. The brothers initially sold soda water from a horse-drawn cart, then transitioned into flavored sodas as the American appetite for soft drinks grew. The company name was eventually shortened to Faygo, and the brand became a staple of Detroit and Midwest culture for over a century.
What distinguishes Faygo historically is the breadth of its flavor portfolio. While national brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi consolidated around a handful of flavors, Faygo maintained dozens of regional specialties — Moon Mist (a citrus blend), Rock & Rye (a unique cola-and-vanilla variant), Cotton Candy, Firework, Cream Soda, Grape, Candy Apple, and more. Many of these flavors have no real parallel in the national soda market.
The Flavor Highlights
Moon Mist Green — a citrus blend of lime and lemon — is arguably Faygo's most distinctive offering: brighter and more complex than standard lemon-lime sodas, with a color that signals its departure from 7UP or Sprite territory. Faygo Cotton Candy is exactly what it promises — a soda that tastes like cotton candy, sweet and slightly creamy without being cloying. Cream Soda is well-executed in a category that's inconsistently handled by larger brands. Firework delivers a nostalgic, slightly tropical fruit punch character that's uniquely Faygo.
All Faygo flavors at Sweet Palace are priced at $6.99 per bottle — higher than grocery store pricing but reflective of the imported and specialty nature of carrying Midwestern regional soda outside its primary market.
The Sweet Palace Recommendation
If you've never had Faygo, Moon Mist Green and Cotton Candy are the two most distinctively different from anything in the mainstream soda category. Both reward the curiosity of trying something that doesn't have an obvious national equivalent. Come explore the full lineup at Sweet Palace — there's almost certainly a Faygo flavor you didn't know you needed.
